patronage

I have to write about Patronage for my ILS essay so I thought I'd write some quick stuff here.

Patronage was useful in the development of science because through monetary support, individuals and societies were able to continue their work and/ or receive permission to publish their works. Additionally, when a work was either privately or publicly associated with an illuminary figure such as that of a king, duke, etc., it received a certain amount of prestige. The work would already have the support of a well-known figure and therefore it was possibly to publish something and have it be immediately accepted just because of the association with King Such-And-Such (and his mom).
